Recipe: Malted Milk Chocolate Chip Cookies + Variations!

Tuesday, December 29, 2015

This is my go-to recipe for some delicious cookies! My family always requests me to bake some every now and then. The original recipe was one from Mrs. Field's Cookbook but I tweaked it a bit. What's great is that you can make variations simply by adding different flavouring to it. I'll give some of my best variations at the end of the post, but this one using Ovaltine is my classic! I wouldn't have discovered this recipe if it wasn't for a dear undergrad housemate... you know who you are. ;)

Malted Milk Chocolate Chip Cookies

~ 2-3 dozen cookies

- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup Ovaltine powder (malted chocolate drink powder)
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 3/4 cup white sugar
- 1/2 cup brown sugar, firmly packed
- 1 cup salted butter, softened
- 2 eggs
- 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
- 2 tablespoons condensed milk
- 1/4 cup chocolate chips (you can adjust this amount if you want more or less)

How to make:

1. Preheat oven to 300° F.
2. In a medium bowl, combine the flour, Ovaltine powder, baking soda, and salt. Mix well and set aside.
3. In a big bowl, mix the white and brown sugar together.
4. Slightly melt the butter in a bowl using the microwave. Add the butter to the big bowl and mix.
5. Add the eggs, vanilla extract, and condensed milk to the big bowl. Mix well until the mixture is light and fluffy.
6. Add the flour mixture and the chocolate chips to the big bowl and mix at low speeds until just combined. Don't overmix.
7. Drop by rounded tablespoons onto a baking sheet about 1.5 inches apart.
8. Bake for 24-25 minutes.
9. Transfer cookies immediately onto a cool surface.

I kind of want to bake these again now.

Here are some variations!

- Add 1 tablespoon matcha powder, cut down 1/4 cup of the Ovaltine powder, cut out the chocolate chips, and sprinkle some icing sugar to make green tea cookies (pictured above :D).
- Use white chocolate chips and macadamia nuts to make white chocolate macadamia nut cookies.
- Instead of using Ovaltine powder, use Horlick powder (malted vanilla drink powder) to make vanilla cookies.
- Instead of chocolate chips, you can add cranberries or raisins to add some fruity taste.
- Make triple chocolate cookies by using 1/4 cup cocoa powder, 1/4 cup Ovaltine powder, and different kinds of chocolate chips.

Enjoy those cookies! If you do make variations, snap me a picture!

Until next time, Des

Best of 2015 (Part 3: Fashion)

Monday, December 28, 2015

Only four more days till the end of 2015! Let's wrap up the year and this series with my bests in fashion!

Tank- These camis from RW&Co are so versatile. I can wear it under a blazer to dress up a work outfit or dress it down for a casual day out. The fit is very flattering and the V-neck is perfect since it's not too low cut. These camis are reversible so it's like having four different ones. I do have to give credit to my friend Fion for telling me about them!

Best of 2015 (Part 2: Beauty & Skincare)

Friday, December 18, 2015

Hello again! I hoped you enjoyed Part 1 of the list with the Bests of 2015. Today's post is Part 2, with my bests in beauty and skincare! I thought I would be able to fit fashion favourites into this post as well but I'll save that for Part 3 instead. :)

Concealer - I use the Maybelline Fit Me Concealer in the shade Sand to help cover my under-eye circles and any spots. It has great coverage and it's easy to blend. The shade matches my skin tone very well. This can be purchased at the drugstore, so it's great quality at a great price.

Best of 2015 (Part 1: Random & Food)

Monday, December 14, 2015

It's time to reflect on all the good things in 2015! Here is the list of all the different things that I loved this year. The list is separated into several categories: random, food, beauty, skincare, and fashion.

Today's post is for all the random things that don't really fit into a specific category and also things related to food!

Talent - Jessica is one of my childhood friends who is slowly but surely making her debut as a singer and songwriter. She has recorded several original songs (now featured on her Soundcloud) and has participated in multiple shows and competitions. Her next show will be at Mod Club (Toronto) on January 16, and ticket details will be posted on her Facebook page. What I love about her music is the beautiful mix of indie, pop, jazz, and R&B vibes all together. I can't stop listening! I'm honoured to have such a talented friend, and I know she's going to be great. You can also follow her on Instagram.

A Caryl Baker Celestial Holiday Look

Saturday, December 12, 2015

I still can't believe that Christmas is just around the corner! Holiday parties to celebrate the season and the year are happening now, so this would be a wonderful makeup look for those festive occasions! I like to keep my makeup simple so this look is very easy to replicate.

OOTD: Our Go-To Sweater Look

Thursday, December 10, 2015

Winter is basically here, but it hasn't gotten too cold yet. Regardless, I have already busted out all my knitwear... scarves, hats, gloves, and sweaters of course (#sweaterweather)!

I had a lot of fun doing this shoot with two of my dearest friends, Tiffany and Christine. We each dressed in our go-to sweater look, and you'll find that we all have very similar taste. ;) This shoot wouldn't have been possible if it wasn't for our amazing photographer, Clarence Pong. You can find more of his photos in his Instagram portfolio @thebabylens. Follow him here!

Christmas Gift Guide 2015

Sunday, December 6, 2015

I am not one of those last-minute shoppers for Christmas gift... in fact, I'm very much the opposite. Sometimes I'd find something and purchase it two months before Christmas even rolls around. I like to make sure that I'm not rushed into getting something random and that there's a big selection of items in store.

Here are some things that I found and believe are great gifts for an assortment of people!

Arbonne's Fall/Winter Statement Lip

Monday, November 30, 2015

When the fall season arrived, it meant the start of bolder and darker lip colours. I put away my bright corals and pinks, and took out the deep berry and burgundy lip colours instead.

Two lip products that I've been using throughout the fall season are Arbonne's Smoothed Over Lipstick and Glossed Over Lip Gloss (I mentioned the lipstick in my Fall Favourites Tag!). Thank you Arbonne for sending these to me and for the opportunity to try them out! You can check out their other cosmetics and skincare here!

*This is not a sponsored post. The products were sent to me as a PR sample for consideration and I was asked nothing in return. Everything written is of my own opinion.*

Cozy Comforts

Tuesday, November 24, 2015

The weather is getting colder real fast, and I need my cozy comforts to keep me warm and fuzzy. Here are mine!

Reading a book with a hot cup of tea, still in pj's and fuzzy socks. My current favourite tea is from the Pretty Tea Shop Peppery Grapefruit Tea (yummy fruity scents with some winter peppery warmth!)

OOTD - Fall Time

Sunday, November 22, 2015

It has been a LONG time since I did an OOTD for you. I had the pleasure of collaborating with two amazing people.

Eunice from StyleStickyNotes is an edgy fashion blogger who knows how to dress with amazing style. Jon from JOPANG VISUALS has a creative eye in photography and I can't thank him enough for taking the time and shooting this OOTD. Please do check out their respective sites!

Sadly there are no more leaves on the trees now. This shoot was done at the perfect time when the leaves were on fire with reds, yellows, and oranges. Both Eunice and I each styled a fall outfit... and the least to say they are both very different!

Fall Favourites Tag

Monday, November 9, 2015

We're about halfway through this beautiful season... and I've picked out my fall favourites for each category. :)

1. Favourite candle?

My favourite fall candle right now is the White Barn "Cranberry Woods" ! It's an earthy berry scent that's not too sweet and it reminds me of the little red berries we see on bushes around this time of year.

Lilli Gordon and Her FAB Line

Thursday, October 29, 2015

I love trying new products and lines because it's like finding treasure when they work well with my skin. A skincare treasure that I've come to adore and use regularly in my regimen is First Aid Beauty (FAB). A recent chat with the FAB founder Lilli Gordon has made me more aware of the importance of choosing what's best for you and that sometimes keeping it simple is the best thing you're doing for your skin.

Chicago Chicago Chicago

Monday, October 26, 2015

Chicago is one of the most beautiful cities I've been to in my lifetime so far with its roots in architecture and culture. I went on a roadtrip with seven friends to the Windy City and here is my photo diary of the adventure.

Eye Post #8: What are "Polarized" Sunglasses?

Saturday, October 24, 2015

I have many people come into the optical and ask me "What's the difference between polarized sunglasses and non-polarized sunglasses?"

Well, let me tell you about it. :)

Room Decor Additions

Friday, October 9, 2015

I've never had a room makeover since I moved into my current home in 2000. My bedroom has evolved but it was at a standstill for a good period of time. I really wanted to update my room to be more mature and less kiddy, have a theme (white, chrome, and wood), and be more organized (I hoard too much for my own good).

I went through most of the things that have been collecting in my bedroom and chucked/donated things I know I don't need. I added some personality and decor to my bedroom with some very affordable pieces that I found at Winners/Walmart/Muji, good for a room makeover on a student budget!

I'm not always home and tend to be forgetful when I need to do routine tasks such as watering plants. This pretend plant is in the cutest pot (love the scallop trim and polka dot design) and it adds some green to my bedroom without me having to worry about it dying anytime soon haha.

Who can use it?

Any girl who would like to get their perfect curl/waves on.

Summer 2015 Greatest Eats

Wednesday, September 16, 2015

This was the summer of good company and TONS of good food. These places ranged from being close to home to places all the way Downtown, but regardless I would definitely go to all of them again! Here are the best eats of my summer. :)

The school term is finally done, and I'm back with my favourite high-end beauty products that are definitely worth the splurge.

Him or Her?

Friday, August 14, 2015

You've probably know of the infamous shoe game. It's always played at weddings to see if the bride and groom know each other. Well, the bf and I played our version of it... see if  YOU know us well enough! Is it him? Or is it me?

Freshpair #beaNUDE (National Underwear Day Enthusiast)!

Tuesday, August 4, 2015

August 5 is National Underwear Day! This holiday was founded by the online retailer of undergarments and underwear called Freshpair, based in New York City ( It's funny to think how these necessary pieces of clothing are "unmentionables" in today's conversations... but it's sometimes brought up among girl talks and that's great! We would share about what's good and what's bad, what's worth it and what's not... you learn a lot about undergarments, at times without having to actually try it or purchase it yourself! I don't know about the guys though haha

I've teamed up with Freshpair to tell you my two essentials in my undergarment wardrobe. They're also beneficial to all girls out there. Don't worry, it's nothing scandalous or over-revealing because that's just not what I would ever wear! :P

Thank you to Freshpair for inviting me to be a part of this campaign!

Eye Post #7: How Does the Optometrist Determine My Prescription?

Monday, August 3, 2015

Taken from

Have you ever wondered how the optometrist determined your prescription after looking at some letters and telling the doctor "1" or "2"? (If you've had an eye exam before then you'll know what I'm referring to :P)

A Fresh New Look

Tuesday, July 14, 2015

Notice anything different?

Yes, my blog used to look a tad bit kiddy with the blue and green dandelion theme. It's about time I updated it. :) Many thanks to Winny for blessing the blogging community with such a beautiful template (check out her blog here)!

Do you like it?

Forever 21 Haul x 2

Monday, July 13, 2015

Yes, today's post consists of not only one Forever 21 haul.... but two! I stopped by Forever 21 two weeks ago and made a purchase in addition to an online order that I received recently. I made the online order just to get a particular thing because it was sold out at all the physical stores (I stopped by three different F21's in hopes to find it but sadly I couldn't). Can you guess what it is?

DIY Gift Ideas 2.0

Wednesday, July 8, 2015

I've been on a recent room redecorating/reorganizing high and with the weddings rolling in, I've had the pleasure of crafting and doing some more DIY fun. The three projects that I'm introducing today have a common theme of COLOUR. Here are some ideas that can hopefully inspire you in your own gifting or decorating ventures!

Finish 5 by Fall

Friday, June 26, 2015

Today's post is a little different than the usual "Empties" that you may read about or watch (an Empties post is coming soon though!). It's a challenge to see if I can finish five products by the start of fall (September 23, 2015). This is part of a link up with my fellow Canadian bloggers over at the Canadian Beauty Blogger Network. This is a good way to motivate me to use up products in my stash so that I can make room for new ones ;)

Life Moment: Nike Women's 15K

Wednesday, June 17, 2015

I enjoy doing races and obstacle courses to challenge myself physically and mentally. The Nike Women's 15K was the longest run I've participated in and I had a blast doing it!

The Nike Women's 15K was set on Centre Island in Toronto. It was a part of a global Nike Women's running series and this was the very first time that it was held in Canada. It was such a success: well organized, amazing marketing, and great spirit from the staff. I'm sure the race will be held annually after this, especially when over 10,000 women have trained and ran to push their limits together.

Current Favourite Accessories

Monday, June 15, 2015

Here are some of my current favourite accessories to add some bling or fancy to an otherwise simple outfit.

1. Kate Spade long gold necklace

Tuesday, June 9, 2015

I tried searching up the definition of "empowerment", but to my surprise there isn't a clear definition of what it is in terms of one's lifestyle and character. Yea there's a definition for this in terms of business but that doesn't apply to this post today.

What do I think of when I hear the word "empowerment"?

Motivation. Positivity. Courage. Being yourself in everything. Always striving for something better.

Shine on! It's up to an adult , to instill in our children , there is nothing , they can not do !!!

Invitation for a Caryl Baker Visage Experience!

Wednesday, May 27, 2015

What a thrill it was to receive an email from a PR representative for Caryl Baker Visage several weeks ago! It was even harder to contain my excitement when a package came in the mail containing many beauty goodies from their new spring collection.

*This is not a sponsored post. The products were sent to me as a PR sample for consideration and I was asked nothing in return. Everything written is of my own opinion.*

Berry Vanilla Yogurt Smoothie Recipe

Monday, April 27, 2015

Spring is here and summer is just around the corner! The warmer weather calls for a nice refreshing drink!

Today on the blog is a recipe for a berry vanilla yogurt smoothie... and the cool thing is that you can use WHATEVER berries you want. It'll taste just as good :) I've used raspberries and blueberries for the smoothie on separate occasions. Each give their own unique taste and I've really enjoyed it for a morning burst of energy, a snack pick-me-up, or even as a post-workout indulgence. You can mix up the choice of berries to get a party of flavours in your mouth haha

My Running-Out-The-Door Makeup!

Wednesday, April 8, 2015

If you have forgotten about me, I don't blame you... it has been several months of a blogging hiatus for me. School, work, and just life in general caught up to me so it has been hard getting myself to sit down and write some stuff for you.

Here's a short and sweet post about my woke-up-late, running-out-the-door makeup that I do (almost everyday :P).
