What Love Should Look Like

Tuesday, July 29, 2014

Many people really appreciated the encouragement and quotes in my past post A Pick-Me-Up for the Defeated so I decided to do something similar for a different theme.

There are times when media wrongly portrays love as something shallow and fickle. Everyone has their own definition of what love is and the following quotes reflect some aspects of love that I believe in.

Beach Ocean Quote Sea Coastal Art Love by ShadetreePhotography

"If He..." sign quote art // If he... makes you laugh, kisses your forehead, says he's sorry, makes an effort, holds your hand, works hard, attempts to understand you ...then believe it or not, he's quite perfect.

If he wants you to be in his life, he'll put you there. You shouldn't have to fight for a spot.

Oh, how I love this quote!

I'm very thankful to have people in my life that demonstrate these qualities of love. I hope that you have loved ones that do the same for you. Cherish and be grateful for them!

July Fashion + Beauty Haul

Monday, July 28, 2014

Another milestone for this little blog has been reached today! I have been accepted into the Her Campus Network, another blogging network that connects bloggers around the world! I'm so thankful to see how this little blog has grown and I hope that this (and my writing) will continue to be a nice read for you all.

Today I'm presenting you with another haul, this time for fashion and beauty. Some I purchased for use in the summer, others were great finds for use in the coming cooler seasons. Here are the featured items!

I've finally found a romper that fits me! I'm not a particularly tall person but the rompers that I've tried before tended to be too short on me (I don't want any part of my gluteus maximus to be revealed!). This one is just right and I feel very comfortable wearing it. What's even better is that I found this romper at Target! The clothes sold here are cheap in price but still great quality, which is exactly what I look for. This romper screams summer with the coral colour and pretty tribal print. It has a drawstring detail at the waist and has pockets as well. Can't wait to wear it in the coming month!

Wilfred Diderot Sweater

This sweater is sold at Aritzia and I've been wanting it for years! I would never buy this at its original price of $95 but lucky for me this was (finally) a part of Aritizia's summer sale! It's still going on so go to their website and check out their stock on clearance! Wilfred is an amazing brand with classic pieces in their collections and this is one of their signature items. The cocoon style and soft-brushed cotton makes it super warm and cozy to wear in the fall and winter, or even on cool summer nights. There are also a few pyramid studs that run down the back of the sweater, which is another feature of this popular sweater. I got this in the dusted lavender colour.

Loose Button Complimentary Welcome Kit

I enjoy reading the reviews that Youtubers and other bloggers do on subscription boxes that are filled with beauty, fashion, or health goodies and I wanted to join in on the fun! I subscribed to the Loose Button Luxe Box that comes once a season. The Luxe Box is moreso for beauty products and it's a cool way to try higher-end mini's or sometimes even full-size products that they include in the package. I received a welcome kit for subscribing and it included these four things: Tekkai Brilliant Glossing Shampoo and Conditioner minis, Essie "Miss Fancy Pants" full size nail polish, and the Lancôme Génefique Youth Activating Concentrate sample. I haven't tried any of them yet but I will have reviews on these coming soon.

bareMinerals Matte Foundation Broad Spectrum SPF 15

My skin is oily and sometimes wearing my usual BB cream makes my face look even more greasy than it is in the summer. I decided to go ahead and try mineral makeup because powder foundation can help absorb oil and keep my face looking matte for a longer period of time than any kind of liquid foundation/cream. This product is now my go-to summer foundation. It's very simple to use and all beauty consultants would tell you to do this: Swirl. Tap. Buff. :P You determine how much coverage you want from this foundation depending on how much you put on so it's very versatile. Another benefit is that this also provides SPF 15 against damaging UV rays from the sun! Titanium dioxide and iron oxide are two ingredients in this powder that are physical sun blocks, however you should not depend only on the powder for sun protection (keep wearing that sunscreen!). I like using this for a light coverage to simply even out my complexion and slightly cover my facial scars so they're not as evident.

Wilfred Scarf

Another find in the Aritzia summer sale that I'm happy to have! Maroon is such a beautiful colour that's perfect for the fall season. The colour matches so nicely with the surrounding leaves that turn red and burgundy during those months and I adore it. This is a lightweight scarf that can add an extra pop of colour to an outfit or add to a layering ensemble. Of course it can help keep my neck warm as well. It's made of linen and I got it in the ange colour.

What are some things that you hauled this month?

Summer Must-Do's

Thursday, July 24, 2014

Hello friends! Another milestone has been made: I've been accepted into the Canadian Beauty Blogger Network! I'm so thankful for this opportunity and really, my drive to write comes from knowing that you appreciate and take the time to read this little blog. So a big thank you and lots of love to all the readers out there!

I collaborated with my long time friend (of 11 years!) Toby with this short list of summer must-do activities. There's only a month of summer left so we must take advantage of the warm, sunny weather and do as much as we can outside! Some of these activities are held on specific days in the summer, some can be done anytime. Take note and enjoy these fun moments with family and friends!

Toby's Summer Must-Do's

Colour Me Rad

Last summer, my friends and I did a 5K run called Colour Me Rad.  This run is unique because during the course of the run, people throw coloured cornstarch at you.  It was such a fun experience, especially since I did it with my closest friends.  It was also a great challenge for me because I’ve never done a 5K run before.  I would definitely recommend this as my number one summer activity for those of you who haven’t done this yet.

Fireworks & Sparklers

Lighting fireworks and playing with sparklers is another one of my summer favourites.  In this picture, it was my first time lighting sparklers so it was really exciting.  I also really liked lighting fireworks and then running away as fast as I can.  It was such a thrilling experience and I would definitely do this again.

Barbeques & Outdoor Potlucks

Last on my summer activities list is having a barbeque potluck.  My friends and I would bring groceries to a friend’s house and we would prepare a meal together.  It’s always such a relaxing activity because after eating, we can just chill and talk.

Desiree's Summer Must-Do's

Farms Farms Farms

Thanks for the picture Bernard!

No, don't worry I don't mean the farms where you see cows, pigs, and lambs (it would be smelly but that could be fun too!)... but the fruit and vegetable farms! It's only in the summer when you get to hand pick your own fruits to enjoy as a refreshing snack, and at the same time you get to support the local vendors! Strawberry picking has always been very popular, and I'm sure my friends Bernard and Vivian enjoyed their time at Whittamore's Farm! This farm prides on its excellent fruit and vegetable harvest that can be picked by customers or bought at their store. It's also known as "the farm in the city" so it makes the trip to the farm not too far and very convenient.

Taken from

If you love lavender (like I do)... there's also a farm for that too! This one is newly opened called Terre Bleu, run by a family in Milton ON. You get to walk among rows and rows of this sweet smelling flower while picking some for yourself as well. I'm sure many of you have heard of how lavender has its calming and anti-anxiety effects on people. It is definitely more of a peaceful and relaxing place to visit compared to a busy and lively fruit farm. Not only is this an opportunity to marvel at the never-ending fields of lavender, but the property also includes an apiary where they harvest their very own honey made by honeybees, an equestrian ring with their own horses, and an essential oil distillery. A beautiful place to visit!

For all the Torontonians out there, this is definitely a summer event that you don't want to miss! Summerlicious is that time in the summer when you get to eat at some of the best restaurants in the Greater Toronto Area. The restaurants that participate in this event create a menu with a set price consisting of three courses and it's a chance for you to try some amazing food and enjoy some fine dining. Restaurants such as Canoe, STOCK, Auberge du Pommier, Bymark, and Sassafraz participate every year. This GTA-wide restaurant event is also held in the winter (known as Winterlicious) but what I  enjoy about the summer event is that you can dress up and have fun with your friends downtown before or after dinner! Picking out a dress to wear and doing my makeup for a fancy meal is always a bonus to a great lunch or dinner in an upscale restaurant. Some of the views from the restaurant are fantastic! (Canoe on the 54th floor in the TD Bank Tower, overlooking the downtown core *swoon*) Dining on the patios is only possible during the summer too!

Hamilton is known as the waterfall capital of the world, with over 100 waterfalls for visitors to admire! I'm sad that I didn't take advantage of seeing these waterfalls when I was in university at McMaster. There are also some that allow you to explore and walk around, in front, at the top, or even behind the rushing water of the waterfalls! It's definitely a beautiful sight, like this photo that I took on my visit to Albion Falls. I got to (carefully) climb up the waterfall and it feels so good to have your feet soak in the clear water on a hot summer day. Definitely worth the drive into this city! Some other famous waterfall sites include Webster Falls, The Devil's Punchbowl, Tiffany Falls... and of course many many more.

What are some of your summer must-do's? Let me know! I'm always looking for new things to do :)

Evening Skincare Routine

Wednesday, July 23, 2014

Hello everyone! Can you believe it is almost the end of July?! Summer is passing by way too fast. It seems unreal that I'll be starting a new program at a new school in a little over a month.

Today I'm sharing my evening skincare routine and the products I use in each step. It has taken me years to finally settle and determine which products are the best for my skin type and issues. For those people out there who have similar skin to me, hopefully this will open you up to other products that can help take care of your skin. For those who have a different skin type, you can simply satisfy your curiosity or try some of the products too! Some of them are suitable for all skin types :)

I like to go through this skincare routine right after I get home from a day out and when I'm ready to settle down at home. Lately the only makeup that I've been using regularly is mascara, cream eyeshadow, undereye concealer, and my eyebrow pencil. There really is no need for me to go all out on work days so I keep it real simple.

Since most of the makeup is generally around my eye area, I use the Neutrogena Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover to get all of that off. I pour some onto a cotton pad, place it on my eye area, wait a couple seconds for the remover to start dissolving the makeup, and then gently wiping everything off. I use the other side of the cotton pad for my other eye. I've heard mixed reviews about this eye makeup remover but it hasn't caused me any problems. It doesn't sting my eyes, it does get all my eye makeup off after one use, and it's very affordable.

I usually hop into the shower after my makeup has been removed and continue with my routine. I only do this step 1-2 times a week. I exfoliate my skin using this St. Ives Green Tea Scrub. It has a slight but pleasant smell (doesn't really smell like green tea though) and it contains little microbeads within the scrub. When you massage it on your face, you can feel the abrasiveness of the beads, but it is not harsh at all. After I wash off the scrub, my skin feels so smooth and soft like a baby's bottom!

I cleanse my face in the shower with Aveeno Clear Complexion Foaming Cleanser, and it's one of my holy grail products. I spoke a bit about this cleanser back in my May favourites so you can read that here. I make sure to take my time gently rubbing the cleanser all over my face so that it can reach deep into the pores and get rid of the dirt and oil from the day.

After I get out of the shower, I continue by toning my face with Simple Soothing Facial Toner. I've also spoken about this product in my June haul post which you can read here. Overall, it has helped my skin tone become more even and dries quickly even without alcohol as some toners have. I pour some onto another cotton pad and wipe it all over my face. I bring it down my neck as well since our neck has skin as sensitive as our face and I want to keep it clean too.

I've been using The Body Shop Vitamin E Eye Cream in the morning and at night to (attempt to) get rid of my dark undereye circles and puffy undereye bags (really, I have the worst of it haha). I squeeze a small dab of the cream and I gently apply it all over my undereye area using my ring finger as it gives the lightest touch out of all your fingers. I saw improvements in my undereye circles and bags when I first started using it but after a prolonged period of time I didn't see any more progress. I'm almost done the tube so I'll be switching to a different eye cream to give my undereyes something new to try.

I incorporated the use of a serum into my evening skincare routine very recently and I'm glad I did! The Sephora Collection Ultimate Brightening Serum has definitely helped my skin fade the hyperpigmentation from acne scarring and also helps my face retain moisture through the night. I wake up with very soft and hydrated skin. I could tell because my skin doesn't look as dull as it used to be. You can read my full review on this product in my post here.

As my second last step I moisturize using my Clinique Moisture Surge Extended Thirst Relief. I really like the gel-like texture so when applied it feels super light and is absorbed into the skin very quickly. It feels as though nothing is there after the application. It is oil-free and I find that for this in particular a little can go a long way. I usually dot the moisturizer on my cheeks, forehead, chin, and temples... and that is enough to cover my entire face. It works very well with my serum to give me hydrated and refreshed skin the next day.

Last but not least is this is holy grail product for my lips! Too bad this container is huge and I can't carry it around with me. I always apply Vaseline to my lips as a balm everyday and whenever my lips feel dry. Something about Vaseline beats all other lip balms out there, in terms of effectiveness and cost too! Most other lip balms I've tried tend to eventually cause my lips to peel but this never ever does.

I know the majority of the products mentioned in my evening skincare routine have links to other posts where I talk about the specific product in a bit more detail, but if you have immediate questions about them, feel free to ask in the comments below! What does your evening skincare routine consist of?

Fun & Effective Workouts: Core

Monday, July 21, 2014

Hi hi hi!

Charmaine and I had the opportunity to get a fitness consultation with a personal trainer at our gym. It was so worth it! He talked to us about dieting, our body composition, and muscle groups. He also gave us simple gym routines that target specific muscle groups and taught us the proper form/technique for each exercise. I've always done some of these exercises at the gym but little did I know that I was doing them wrong the entire time!

It was a great learning time for us and in this workout series I thought I'd share with you the routines that he prepared for us! This first one is a core workout to target upper abs, middle abs, lower abs, and obliques. Get ready for some sore abs!

Do exercises 1 to 4 one after the other to complete one set. Do 4 sets.

1. Ab Crunch Machine (12 reps)

Taken from

Sit in seat with pads in front of chest. Adjust the weights to get some resistance. Crunch forward, hold, and then relax back.

2. Vertical Leg Lifts (12 reps)

Taken from

Push against the back panel. Straighten legs out. Toes point forward. Lift straight legs up, hold, and then lower.
Can make it easier by doing knee lifts instead.

Taken from

3. Floor Leg Lifts (12 reps)

Taken from

Hands behind head. Straight legs. Toe point forward. Lift straight legs up to about 45 degrees, hold, lower but do not touch the floor. Repeat until reps are done.
Can make it easier by placing hands by your butt and slightly under butt. Can make it harder by adding a weight to hold between feet while doing the lifts.

4. Spider Planks (12 reps)

Taken from

Get into plank position on elbows. Feet are apart, a bit wider than shoulder width. Bring right knee towards right elbow while keeping straight back parallel to floor and then place foot back. Repeat with left knee to left elbow to complete first rep.
Can make it easier by doing basic plank and holding for 30 seconds. Can make this harder by adding a plate on your back for more resistance.

Taken from

For the following two exercises, complete all the sets for one before continuing onto the other.

5. Russian Twists (3 sets, 12 reps)

Taken from

Feet planted on ground, knees pointed up. Sit back to form a V-shape with your legs and upper body. Holding a weight, extend arms straight in front of you, parallel to legs. Without moving legs, bring your extended arms to one side by twisting upper body so that it's parallel to floor, hold, and then twist to the other side and do the same thing.

6. Bottoms Up (3 sets, 12 reps)

Taken from

Lie on your back. Lift legs towards the ceiling so that they're perpendicular to the floor. Lift until your butt is raised off of floor as well, hold, then lower.

Finish off with 20 minutes of cardio (interesting fact: doing cardio as a burnout after your routine can help you lose double the amount of calories than if you did cardio in the beginning before your routine!).

The personal trainer said that if we're able to do this at least once a week, we'll begin to see results in 3-4 weeks. Have a good workout!

Review: Sephora Ultimate Brightening Serum

Friday, July 18, 2014

Happy Friday, it's the end of another week! Mmmm, I'm currently sipping an iced coffee for an extra boost of energy to finish off this last work day of the week.

Today I have a review of the Sephora Collection Ultimate Brightening Serum for you. I recently incorporated this into my evening skincare routine (a post on this coming soon!) and it was a great decision to do so.

Who can use it?
Serums are best used when you're a young adult or more mature. Kids should not be using products like this. It has a very pleasant smell but if you're very sensitive to any kind of fragrance then a different serum may be better for you.

What is it?
This brightening serum helps diminish any discolouration from newly emerging or old skin hyperpigmentation. The discolouration may be in the form of acne scars (which is what I use it for), sun spots, or simply due to aging. The ingredients that help with anti-spots include vitamin C, licorice, brown seaweed extract, and hop plant active. The serum also contains HydroSenn+ which helps moisturize and hydrate the skin by forming a protective film and retaining water. This is formulated without parabens and research has shown that after a few weeks, people saw an improvement in complexion radiance and evenness. This can be used not only on your face, but also your hands, neck, and décolleté.

When do I use it?
You can use it daily as a part of your morning and evening skincare routine, although I prefer only using it at night.

How do I use it?
Serum should be used after you cleanse and tone but BEFORE you moisturize. Take a pump of the serum and dab it all over the area for which you're using it. Gently pat the product into your skin until it's absorbed.

How much is it?
As stated in the name of the product, this is found at Sephora. Serums generally cost a bit more because it is a specialized skincare product. The original price is $36, however it is on sale right now for $19! That's a bargain you can't miss out on. Since it is on sale most stores may have sold out of the serum. When I went I got the last one in store! However you can still order this online.

My thoughts?
I love it. After using it for several nights I was able to see that my acne scarring was already starting to fade! It gets absorbed into the skin very quickly and I really like the smell of the product. It comes in a pretty big bottle so it will last for a while. I'm glad to have included this step into my skincare routine because my skin--especially after the previous years of acne, redness and scarring-- needs the extra help in correcting the texture and hyperpigmentation. When I finish this bottle I will probably switch to an anti-aging serum because skin discolouration can only be improved by so much. By the time I finish this serum there will probably be no further diminishing of my spots.

If you have any other questions regarding this serum, feel free to ask me in the comments below!

Until next time, Des

My Running Playlist

Thursday, July 17, 2014

Good morning! When I was waiting for the bus to go to work, the skies were ominous and threatened to rain buckets of water on me. However during my trip down to the office the sun began to peak through the clouds and soon enough I could see the blue sky! Yay for spontaneous, always changing weather.

I'm not one to say that I love going on runs/jogs but when I do, I always feel so good after, mentally and physically. It's a great form of exercise and it's moreso the initial push to go for a run that's difficult to achieve. However, I do feel more inclined to go when I have a motivating playlist to listen to as I run.

I admit, I do like mainstream music because it's so catchy and upbeat. Songs that make me wanna bob my head and tap my feet are up my alley, old or new. Here are some of the songs on my playlist that keep me going on a run, maybe it'll motivate you to go on yours!

Hedley- Crazy for You

Pitbull feat. Ke$ha- Timber

Pharrell Williams- Happy

Katy Perry- Roar

Ed Sheeran- Sing

Jason Derulo- In My Head

Demi Lovato feat. Cher Lloyd- Really Don't Care

Taio Cruz feat. Ludacris- Break Your Heart

Sara Bareilles- Brave

Eminem- Not Afraid

Glee- Forget You (Cover)

Ellie Goulding- Anything Can Happen

Lights- Toes

Taylor Swift- I Knew You Were Trouble

Bruno Mars- Treasure

What's In My Bag (Summer Edition)

Wednesday, July 16, 2014

Hello friends! I'm about to fall asleep after eating a very carb-loaded lunch at work so hopefully I don't make too many typos as I'm writing this to ya.

I get so excited when I see a "What's In My Bag" video in my YouTube subscription box. I really don't know why I love watching these videos so much... maybe because I can get inspiration from the kind of bag they're using, or for things that are necessary to carry or interesting to have. All in all it satisfies my curiosity to see what people have in their bags haha. Here is my version in the form of a blog post!

I've been working full-time at an office so the majority of my summer is spent sitting at this desk where I'm writing right now. This is the Tommy Hilfiger bag that I take everyday because it's large enough to carry what I need and I'd say it looks professional enough! It's very functional with many pockets and lots of space.

I keep this cute Stitch card and change holder in the small zipper pocket on the outside. I've been using this since my second year of undergrad and it's still intact (although one ear is completely lost and the other is on it's last leg). This was bought in Hong Kong and I keep my bus pass and some loose change in this. My home key, keytags, and whistle are also kept on this along with my lanyard (repping my alma mater!).

I keep my miscellaneous stuff in the large compartment closest to the front of my bag. The back compartment is to carry things required for work.

These are the things that I keep in the front compartment:
- My iPhone 4S resides in the little pocket made to carry your cell (not shown because I'm using it to take these pictures).
- Reactine allergy medication for my seasonal allergies.
- Tissue pack
- Ray Ban sunglasses
- L'Occitane Pivoine Flora hand cream
- My Perch umbrella from Hong Kong is very lightweight and I love the polka dot pattern.
- Tic Tac in the "Strawberry Fields" flavour to satisfy a sudden sweet tooth.
- Pen
- My striped "beauty" pouch from Indigo, it was on clearance for only $2!
- Small case of colourful Staedtler pens for marking in my Bible
- The EOS lipbalm in "Honeydew".
- The earphones that I carry are the ones that came with my phone.
- Water to stay hydrated at work.

In this pouch I keep: some sort of lip product (currently it's Maybelline Baby Lips in "Cherry Me", Nyx lip gloss in "Beige"), Maybelline Dream Matte Powder (so sad it's discontinued *cry*), Body Shop Tea Tree Gel for acne spot treating, glasses wipe, hairbrush, hairtie, small Kabuki brush and my Bath & Body Works hand sanatizer in "Orange Sapphire".

At the back of my bag I keep my folder (Mac Mac Mac!) which holds documents that I need for work, stickynote pad from the company (in case I ever need to quickly write something down), and my Bible for devotional reading during breaks.

I keep my Coach clutch in the middle zipper pocket. I like to use a clutch as a wallet in the summer because I can easily grab it and only carry that for quick errands or chilltimes. It also helps me narrow down what is essential or not for things to keep in my wallet so I don't end up carrying tons of cards and such. It's also big enough to fit my Domo change purse inside as well!

That's everything that I have in my bag, what about yours? What are some things that you find necessary or cool to carry?

Until next time, Des

A Pick-Me-Up for the Defeated

Monday, July 14, 2014

Have you been feeling defeated lately? Things aren't going according to plan?

I had my own little rough patch several months back when I realized that I wasn't going to optometry school since my position on the waitlist is pretty far down. However, I knew that sulking will do no good and being bitter at myself will not help me let go. I couldn't let myself stay defeated because of one rejection.

Are you feeling or experiencing something similar?  Let these inspirational quotes from Pinterest speak to you. :)

When someone tells you it can't be done, it's more of a reflection of their limitations, not yours..

taking a deep breath after today and reminding myself of this. after all, ill go to sleep and wake up with another chance tomorrow

If Plan A didn't work....the alphabet has 25 more letters. Stay cool. #smiles

Always look to the positive in a not so positive situation.

Feeling better? I hope so, even if it's just a little bit. :)
