Wedding Wednesday: Budgeting Tips

Photo Credit: Cari Zhu Photography (IG: @thecarizhuphoto, website: www.carizhu.com)

It is fun to plan out the details of a wedding, but your vision for it and all the ideas that you want to come alive must be doable within your budget. C and I are funding the wedding ourselves so it was extremely necessary for us to sit down before doing any planning to figure out our wedding budget and potential expenses. It was hard, especially when so many Pinterest pictures and Google searches show beautiful wedding inspiration that may actually cost more than what we expect.

Here are some of my little tips for you, and hopefully it'll help you manage your current or future wedding finances! :)

Autumn OOTD

Life has been busy. Buying my future place with C, wedding planning, and busier work hours has taken its toll on me. I come home tired, ready to crawl into bed. It has really made time pass by so fast, and I can't believe the first potential snowfall is already coming up later this week! I need to get this little autumn OOTD out before the snow hits!

In this last part of my Peru travel series  (sorry for the delay!), I've compiled a list of my essential items that I found super helpful when I was travelling!

Givenchy Noir Interdit Mascara

I was so ready to test this out when it arrived on my doorstep! Thank you Givenchy!

Noir Interdit* is Givenchy's latest mascara release. It has such an interesting design as the wand can bend to a 90 degree angle (the following pic)! The main benefit of the mascara is to help create extreme length, along with buildable volume. It doesn't have a waterproof formula though.

My Travel Skincare & Makeup Bag

It was a spur of the moment decision to make a travel series on the blog ('cause how often will I get to do posts like this? haha). Today's post is on what I brought with me on my trip in my makeup and skincare bag.

Makeup

For my makeup I brought the minimum, enough to make me look alive and presentable during the day. The few things I fixed up daily are: brows, lashes, under-eye circles, and acne coverup.

Travel To Peru

I haven't been on vacation in over five years, so this trip to Peru was much needed! I travelled with C's family and had a blast (it was also my first trip with C)! Peru has amazing scenery, delicious local foods, and one of the Seven Wonders of the World: Machu Picchu! Here is my photo diary of the trip. :)

A Healthier Lifestyle

Back in January I had made a resolution to do some sort of exercise on all my days off... well, that died a couple months in haha. So, here is another post to not only motivate you but also remind me to get healthy and fit again.

Here are some changes that I still need to enforce for me to live a healthier lifestyle. All of them would be beneficial for you too, and if you're already a pro and doing all of this... then you gotta help me get better!

Mixit: Customize Your Granola!

Whenever I go to the grocery store, the granola or trail mix that are ready made always have something that I don't like (e.g. raisins) or has something I like missing in it (e.g. dried strawberries). Well, all my problems are now solved with Mixit!

Mixit is a Canadian company located in Quebec. The owners Oldrich and Stephanie wanted to create a food option that was healthier, customized, and fun for everyone! Whether it's for breakfast or a midday snack, you can choose to get their pre-made mixes or create your own by selecting from a variety of granola, dried fruits, nuts, and seeds. All the ingredients are sourced locally. To top it all off, you get to choose the design and art of your Mixit tube as well!

Different Paramedics?

You may be wondering, "why am I writing about such a random topic?". Well, it's actually not that random for me. :P The bf is a paramedic! Some of you have asked about the different classes of paramedics and which one he is. I took the opportunity to ask him and to learn more myself!

There are three main classes of paramedics. Each denote their scope of practice:

Primary Care Paramedic (PCP)

They are the entry level paramedics in some provinces, one of them being Ontario. The bf is a primary care paramedic. They can perform defibrillation, administer oxygen, start an IV, administer symptom relief medications, perform trauma immobilization, and other basic medical care. The final medical diagnosis is still needed by a doctor at the hospital.

Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP)

There is a higher demand for advanced care paramedics because of their advanced skills and education as a practitioner. They carry and administer a greater variety of medication than the PCP. ACP's can also conduct more skilled procedures such as intubation for airway management or provide pharmacological relief for various conditions. They have a larger scope of practice than the PCP.

Critical Care Paramedic (CCP)

CCP's are significantly experienced as ACP's. Not only do they work in ambulances but also helicopters as well. Their expertise is especially needed when they're transporting a critical care patient from one hospital to another. Their scope of practice allows them to perform needed procedures on a patient during the transport that a doctor or nurse would usually do. This prevents the sending hospital from losing highly trained staff on patient transfers. CCP's cover the scope of practice of PCP's and ACP's, along with additional skills that only they can do (e.g. mechanical ventilation).

There are also paramedics that specialize in a certain type of work, which is also further classified by the scope of practice as discussed above. Some of them include:
- Flight paramedics
- Tactical paramedics (provide specialized medical care to the emergency task force of police)
- Rapid response paramedics (trained and equipped to work alone and provide full paramedic care  using a smaller vehicle that's not a traditional ambulance so that they can get to the scene quicker)

Hopefully you were able to gain some insight! I definitely did, and I truly respect the role that the bf has in providing emergency care to our city. :)

Until next time, Des

Eye Post #12: What Does "RO" Mean?

Desiree Law, B.Sc, RO

Some people have asked me what RO stands for. RO is the designation of a "Registered Optician".

Opticians are regulated by the College of Opticians of Ontario (COO), one of 21 health Colleges established by the law. COO is responsible for ensuring that the optical services provided by licensed opticians to the public of Ontario are safe, ethical, and high quality care.

Aside from schooling and minimum 1000 co-op hours, opticians are required to pass a three day national licensing exam to ensure that they are capable and knowledgeable to provide all the services required of an optician for eyeglasses and contact lenses. Some of the skills tested include frame adjustment and measurements, inserting/removing contact lenses for a patient, determining an unknown prescription from a pair of glasses, etc.

When COO has recognized that you have completed all the schooling requirements and have successfully passed the licensing exam, they will grant you the designation of RO.

I hope that this has helped you understand my career in the optical industry! :)

Life Lately - Food Edition (Apr '17)

The past few months was all about food!

I walked by this little bake shop one afternoon and I regret not going in. A couple weeks later I was back downtown and this time I made sure to stop by Nugateau. Nugateau specializes in eclairs in an assortment of flavours, from coffee to salted caramel, apple to pistachio, and a whole lot more. Not only is the shop beautiful and minimal in aesthetics, the eclairs themselves are beautiful too! You can taste the unique flavour of each eclair without it being overwhelmingly sweet. It's a luxury snack to indulge but once in a while you just crave that perfect eclair. I don't know any other place that can make eclairs as good as Nugateau.

Bliss Triple Oxygen Instant Energizing Eye Mask

After a long day, the first thing I would want to do is kick off my shoes, get into comfy clothes, and pamper myself in some way to to re-energize. Sometimes I would do a quick facial before winding down for the rest of the day. I thought I'd try this Bliss Triple Oxygen Instant Energizing Eye Mask* to give some life to my tired undereyes, which is usually the area that easily reveals my fatigue.

The eye mask is suppose to brighten, de-puff, and hydrate the undereyes. It's also meant to be used only once a week.

Peter & Pat's Pierogies 3 Ways

One of my go-to foods that's simple to make but still delicious are perogies! Seriously, anything involving cooked potatoes are my thing! These Peter & Pat's Bacon and Cheddar Cheese Pierogies* are the bomb! They've recently launched their perogies at Costco locations across Canada. They're also made with a 60-year old family recipe that's low fat, low cholesterol, all-natural, and without preservatives.

Each package of Peter & Pat's Pierogies has instructions on how to cook the perogies with different methods: boil, pan-fry, bake, steam, or microwave. It doesn't take long to cook and they're also so easy to make for your own meal or as appetizers to share with friends and family. There are three different ways that I love to have my perogies, and I thought I'd share them with you today.

The Natural Curator

If you are into green beauty, organic products, or all natural regimes, then The Natural Curator is the website to check out. The Natural Curator hosts a curated collection of the globe's best green beauty brands. It recently launched for use in Canada.

Founders Karine and Gabrielle believe that natural beauty is not only a safe alternative, but also a better one. Why use chemicals or products with ingredients we have no clue of when you can use products that are derived from nature itself? Sometimes it gets hard to discover independent green beauty brands because they aren't as accessible or advertised, so The Natural Curator makes that easier for us. They have products for face, body, hair, and beauty.

Home Decor Inspiration

Even though I don't have my own place yet, I love looking through Pinterest and finding inspiration for my future home. I do love the minimal styling and decor that have been trending over the past year, and I've picked out five different pieces that I will definitely incorporate into my home! I've already purchased some of these for myself and started using it in my bedroom (for now).

1. Marble accents

Valentines Day Red Lips

Valentines Day is coming up, and I wanted to wear a red lip for C. In collaboration with Dubloft, I picked one out of four popular matte red liquid lipsticks to wear for that day. Check them out in the video below! This post is in collaboration with Joanna, Janine, Shawna, Natalie, Renee and some other fellow bloggers/Youtubers of the Canadian Beauty Blogger Network (check out their Valentines Day posts by clicking their names!).

Lipstick Queen Chess Collection "Rook"

I'm new to the brand Lipstick Queen, but after having tried one of their lipsticks... I'm hooked! It's name is a good representation of it. I enjoy using a variety of lip products but once I find one that I LOVE, it's a repurchase and will stay in my "favourites" collection. This definitely made it in.

This Lipstick Queen lipstick is part of the soon-to-be released Lipstick Chess Collection, which is a take on modern must-have lip colours that are dark or nude. Classic colours like a classic game of chess. There are six shades and each lipstick is named after a chess piece: King, Queen, Rook, Bishop, Knight, and Pawn. I have the one called Rook*. It is enriched with natural waxes, oils, and Vitamin E, making it very comfortable to wear and smooth to apply.

Chicken Quiche Recipe

One of my new year goals was to cook a meal for my parents once a week. I've done it for the past three weeks so far and it has been great! For someone who doesn't enjoy cooking as much as others (aka me), it truly does feel like an accomplishment each time.

Today I'm sharing with you the recipe for a chicken quiche! It was quite good, and you can always have breakfast food anytime.

Inglot AMC Pure Pigment Eyeshadows (The Star in You Collection)

Never did I imagine that I would be filming a video for you. I know that I can be an awkward turtle in front of a camera but thanks to DubDub and their team, I was able to shoot my very first video! Everything was done using their DubSuite app on my phone: filming, editing, and publishing! I don't know when will be the next time I produce another video, but nonetheless it was a great experience to see and do the work that goes into making one.. and believe me, it's a lot more than you think.

At the DubLoft studio in Toronto, I also got the opportunity to check out Inglot's newest makeup products. Out of all, I really liked the Inglot AMC Pure Pigment Eyeshadows from their new The Star In You Collection. A light wash of these loose pigment powders over the lids creates a shimmery (but not over the top) look. It's so pretty, and like the name of the collection it shines like the stars in a night sky! I know it's cheesy but it's true. :P They can also be intensified by adding duraline to make it into a liquid formula. Even in the pot or on the lids, the pigments have a duochrome effect since the colour changes in different angles, but it's not dramatic. These eyeshadows along with the other releases from the Star In You Collection have been added to the permanent line of Inglot's makeup! You can purchase them through the video by clicking on the tags and it will take you to the Amazon page.

Hope you enjoyed watching! Should I continue doing more videos in the future?
