Eye Post #9: Blue Light Filter Lens Coating

It's standard to have anti-reflection coating, scratch resistant coating, and UV coating on the lenses of your glasses. They help improve the quality of your vision. What's also important is the health of your eyes, and the latest addition to the lens coating family -- the blue-violet light filter -- is focused exactly on that.

Are you someone who:
- Gets headaches/dry eyes/fatigue/blurred vision after looking at a computer screen for a long time?
- Have eyestrain issues?
- Tears up at the bright light in rooms or from your phone screen?
- Has a family history of age-related macular degeneration (AMD)?
- Has trouble sleeping?
... the blue-violet light coating will be very beneficial for you!

Blue-violet light is emitted from all electronic screens (phones, tablets, computers, TV) and fluorescent/LED light bulbs. In the short run, this light causes symptoms such as fatigue, dry eyes, eyestrain, or headaches especially after looking at screens for a long time. The light also suppresses the release of melatonin in our body so it can cause insomnia in some people. In the long run, this blue-violet light has been linked to increased chances of cataracts and AMD.

The blue-violet light filter, which can now be applied as an eyeglass lens coating, helps reflect some of that harmful light away from the eyes. Useful light still passes through the lenses. The blue colour that people see on the front of the lenses is actually the blue light being reflected.

When you are looking through the lenses with the filter, you'd notice that everything looks warmer, as though there is a slight yellow tint. This colour is what makes bright lights seem more calm and not as harsh. At the end of the day, your eyes feel more comfortable and they are not as strained. The blue light filter is offered by most lens brands, but the best ones are Essilor Crizal Prevencia, Nikon Seecoat Blue UV, or Zeiss DuraVision BlueProtect (click on each brand for more information about their coating!). Ask your opticians about them!

In an age that requires our eyes to constantly look at electronic screens that emit harsh and harmful light, this coating is able to help protect and ensure lasting health of the eyes. I have the blue light filter on my own glasses too and have personally experienced the benefits from it. I know that I'll never be able to go back to lenses without it, so I completely support this technology as a student optician in the industry. Whether you're a young child, elderly, or someone who doesn't even need visual correction...the blue light filter is still needed to provide top quality protection. Give your eyes the best out there because they're not replaceable!

Until next time, Des
