2017 Goals

Wednesday, December 28, 2016

2017 is fast approaching! I reflected on the past year and have come up with these goals for the new year. Hopefully you can all keep me to these the best you can!

- Get a custom URL for this little blog. Done on Feb 6, 2017! :)
- Exercise on the days I don't work or if I have an opening shift.
- Read the entire Bible in a year.
- Take a trip the the Bite Beauty Lip Lab in downtown Toronto and custom make my own lipstick.
- Cook once a week for my family.
- Make my own tea/coffee more often than buying.
- Keep track of finances weekly.
- Start minimizing my makeup collection to only products I love.

Some I will succeed in maintaining, some will just die off after the first month... but the most important thing is that I try! My Orla Kiely planner will definitely help me keep track and maintain all of these resolutions.

Is there anything you want to accomplish in the new year?

Until next time, Des

Seven Deadly Sins of Beauty Tag

Thursday, December 22, 2016

I've watched several videos and read blog posts on this fun beauty tag so I thought I'd entertain you with it! I got to give a shout out to Liz from Stay Gorgeous! and Kaitlyn from Kaitlyn Elisabeth Beauty because after reading/watching your tags I wanted to do it too!

Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Water Foundation

Wednesday, December 14, 2016

This was a foundation that I fell in love with right away, even while I was swatching it at Sephora. I'm definitely going to use this in my upcoming holiday parties!

Fresh Sugar Lip Seduction (Holiday Set)

Monday, December 5, 2016

What's better than having nourished, moisturized lips with a beautiful tint of colour? Well, this Sugar Lip Seduction* holiday set containing the Sugar Lip Treatments by Fresh would be an awesome gift for the ladies who are intimidated by lipsticks and glosses, who you want to treat with quality lip products, or ladies who don't want to think too hard about what to wear on their lips in the morning as they're rushing out the door (aka me).

This post is in collaboration with fellow blogger and dear friend Robyn! Check out her morning routine over on her blog Every Small Endeavour! All photos are shot by the bf Clarence :) (check him out at his Instagram @thebabylens!).

When I do have a day off work, I enjoy taking it slow in the morning.

Chorus Supernatural

Wednesday, November 30, 2016

Your skin has to work with the products that you use, and that's why my skincare routine doesn't change often. However, after trying out these three products from Canadian brand Chorus Supernatural, some of them may actually make it into my routine as a regular product!

Life Lately (Nov '16)

Wednesday, November 23, 2016

What I've been up to lately:

I went to Allan Gardens for the very first time in Downtown Toronto! It was lovely, almost like a little jungle within the city. It was a nice day off from work and I got to spend it with good company. It also happened to be a friend's birthday on the same day! :)

Rimmel Exaggerate Waterproof Eyeliner

Saturday, November 19, 2016

It's so troublesome for me to find a good eyeliner. With my oily lids, pencil and gel liners easily smudge or fade on me (if you know any that will not to do that, let me know in the comments below!!). Thus, liquid liners are the ones that I usually purchase, but even still it truly has to be one that can stay on well for the entire day.

Earlier this month I did the $10 makeup challenge (you can read here!) and I didn't have an eyeliner that was within the budget. I made a trip to Walmart and randomly picked up this one: Rimmel Exaggerate Waterproof Eyeliner. To my surprise, it's actually REALLY GOOD.

Eye Post # 10: Which Contact Lenses Should I Wear?!

Wednesday, November 16, 2016

Many people have asked me to help them out in their dilemma regarding contact lenses (CL): which one should they wear? It's important to have a CL fitting done by an optician because they can determine whether or not you are a suitable candidate for CL wear based on a physical examination of your eyes. In addition, the optician takes the necessary measurements and tests to determine which CL is right for you, along with information on your lifestyle, job, and hobbies. You can use the information provided in my post as an overview to the different CL types. :)

November Beauty Haul

Saturday, November 12, 2016

I need to find a better way to store my makeup stash again. It happens every time whenever I add new products to it.

I took advantage of a recent Sephora sale and my parents' trip to Japan which resulted in a decent beauty haul. I usually purchase one or two items at a time but this time around there's definitely enough to share with you!

Sweet & Easy Apple Crumble Recipe

Wednesday, November 9, 2016

I must say that I've made this more than once to make sure that this recipe is perfecto to share! :)

As mentioned in a previous post about my must-do's of autumn, making your own apple pie or crumble is such a fun and yummy activity to do with family and friends... especially if you're using apples that you picked from the trees yourself! It's a bit more simple than making a pie from scratch.

Here is the recipe that I use to make some delicious apple crumble!

$10 Makeup Challenge

Tuesday, October 25, 2016

It's so great to be able to sit down at a Starbucks, sip my Caramel Macchiato, and write this post for you. :)

I saw Estee and Arden do the $10 Makeup Challenge on Youtube here and I thought it would be fun to go through my stash and do this challenge myself! For the most part I was able to find the products I needed that were under $10 a piece in my collection except for two items... which yes, I did have to go out and buy haha

THE $10 MAKEUP CHALLENGE: You can only use makeup that's worth $10 or less.

Summer Essentials 2016: Lifestyle & Food

Thursday, July 28, 2016

Sorry I haven't posted in a while! I picked up another job and it has taken up my time. However I am slowly getting back into balance with everything, so here's part 2 of my Summer Essential series on lifestyle and food!

How to Use Beauty Oils (Poetic Blend Giveaway!)

Tuesday, June 21, 2016

I never considered having facial/essential/beauty oils as part of my skincare routine. The common thought surrounding oils is that it may add to the oil on the face and make things even more greasy as it is. However that's not the case, and it's a tried and true claim! With a small amount, essential oils add extra nourishment to dull skin and gives a natural dewy glow that doesn't make your face look like a greaseball. Having that soothing oil can also help counteract your skin from making excess oil which is what causes greasiness.

Giveaway details at the end! :D

5 Favourite Brushes: Real Techniques, Still, Sigma, Sonia Kashuk, Crown Brush

Thursday, June 9, 2016

The majority of makeup and cosmetics require a brush for the best application and finish. It has to be soft, full, and durable especially when washing is required routinely. Here are my current favourites!

OOTD: Men's Edition

Sunday, June 5, 2016

We often see OOTD posts for the ladies, and on the blog it has only been  me and my gals. I thought I would turn it around and feature some men in my life who dress well in their own style and were so willing to participate in this photoshoot. Thank you to a dear friend (DT) for inspiring me to do an OOTD post for the guys out there. ;)

A special shoutout to the bf Clarence for the awesome photos! You can find more of his photography work on Instagram at @thebabylens!

Enjoy this feature! Each guy shares a bit about their style. They're amazing for collaborating with me. :)

Products Not For Me No. 1

Wednesday, May 25, 2016

I would love it if every single product I had was perfect for me... but sadly it's not a perfect world. I've tried each of these but they are just not for me. Here they are and why I don't love them.

3 Favourite Concealers: Urban Decay, MUFE, Maybelline

Monday, May 16, 2016

My three favourite concealers right now:

1. Urban Decay Naked Skin Concealer in Med-Light Neutral - I use this mainly for my undereyes. It has a very light and thin consistency, just like how it's described to be "weightless". It still gives great coverage and it has some light diffusing properties, making the undereyes slightly brighter. Once it's set it doesn't budge or fade throughout the day.

2. Makeup Forever Full Cover Extreme Camouflage Cream - I use this mainly to cover up any spots. Even for big breakouts it completely covers up the redness. The consistency is thicker so a bit of time is needed to blend it in for a natural but full coverage. I unfortunately don't remember which shade I got and it doesn't say on the packaging. :( I'll have to figure out which shade I need when the times comes to replace it.

3. Maybelline Fit Me Concealer in Sand - This is my favourite all-around concealer. I would take this single concealer on a trip and it'll do its job with both undereyes and spots. It doesn't last as long as the above two concealers and by the end of the day the dark undereyes or redness of spots start to emerge. For a drugstore concealer it is a great option though!

Do you have any concealer recommendations for me?

Until next time, Des

Review: Foreo Luna 2 (Combination Skin)

Friday, May 13, 2016

I have a manual nylon exfoliating brush that I sometimes use to help cleanse and exfoliate my face. I didn't particularly see an improvement so I never felt inclined to use it often. However, this little blue sucker does the same thing as that brush and more... and I did see my face become more firm with a brighter complexion. Let me introduce you to Foreo Luna 2.

Last Minute Mother's Day Gift Ideas

Thursday, May 5, 2016

I've already gotten a few things for my mom from this very list! They're all accessible from local stores or it may inspire you to get variations of these suggestions. :)

Matte Must-Haves

Thursday, April 28, 2016

The matte look was the trend in 2015, and it's still going strong! I have days when I prefer having a dewy look or gloss on the lips, but I've also been one to follow this trend for the majority of time. Here are some of my matte must-haves:

Brand Focus: G.M. Collin Skincare #madeincanada

Friday, April 22, 2016

I am back! I finished my last school exam of life today and it feels so good to be free! At the same time I also feel very productive to get back on track with the blog so I don't leave you all hanging!

Today I'm focusinh on a Canadian skincare brand: G.M. Collin. The brand was founded in France and its French roots made its way to Montreal where all their innovative skincare is now produced and packaged. The company produces quality products that combine new technologies with the brilliance of nature for both men and women. I love discovering brands that are otherwise masked by the bigshots in the industry (basically those that are sold in the usual places such as Sephora or Hudson's Bay) because it gives me an opportunity to try products that may do just as well or better for my skin. My exposure to other brands also enables me to share them with you too. :)

*All products were sent for consideration. Everything written is my own opinion.

What's On Your Lips Today? Revlon, Bite Beauty, & Rimmel

Friday, April 1, 2016

What's on your lips today?

Stephanie has on the Revlon Colorburst Lip Butter in Red Velvet (wine red). For someone who doesn't want her lip colour to stand out too much, the sheer finish still has the perfect, visible amount of pigmentation. You can check out the entire line at any drugstore (I personally have Peach Parfait, a sheer peach). At Wal-Mart they're each $8.46.

Haul: One of A Kind Show '16 Best Finds

Monday, March 28, 2016

I had the privilege of going to the One of A Kind Show, thanks to a dear friend who is also one of the amazing artisans I will be featuring today! For those of you who've never heard of this event, The One of A Kind Show & Sale first started in 1975. The show celebrates handmade excellence, creativity, and craftsmanship. This year it featured over 450 Canadian artisans, all gathered with the booths that they self-constructed at the Enercare Centre in Downtown Toronto. You can find everything from jewellery to food, fashion to stationary, decor to gifts.  The show is hosted every spring and winter. I am a huge supporter of local businesses. Their effort and passion for their work is evident and it translates into quality products.

This year, I have five particular businesses/brands that I would like to give a shout out. I purchased something from each of these businesses! It was such a pleasure getting to meet the owners and hear about the story behind each business.

Eye Post #9: Blue Light Filter Lens Coating

Sunday, March 27, 2016

It's standard to have anti-reflection coating, scratch resistant coating, and UV coating on the lenses of your glasses. They help improve the quality of your vision. What's also important is the health of your eyes, and the latest addition to the lens coating family -- the blue-violet light filter -- is focused exactly on that.

Are you someone who:
- Gets headaches/dry eyes/fatigue/blurred vision after looking at a computer screen for a long time?
- Have eyestrain issues?
- Tears up at the bright light in rooms or from your phone screen?
- Has a family history of age-related macular degeneration (AMD)?
- Has trouble sleeping?
... the blue-violet light coating will be very beneficial for you!

Mondor @ Toronto Fashion Week 2016

Friday, March 18, 2016

I was invited to attend Toronto Fashion Week and watch the Mondor runway show. It was such a dream to actually watch those models walk down the T stage. Each individual's sense of style, whether it was a guest or model, was also so interesting and beautiful to see.

Pantone 2016 Colours of the Year - In My Collection

Monday, March 14, 2016

Pantone's colours of the year are Rose Quartz & Serenity. They are such pretty colours!

Review: Tresemme Volume Revolution Reverse Wash

Friday, March 11, 2016

When I received this package from the post and opened it, the first thing that came to mind was "Cool! Shampoo, conditioner, and styling cream to try out!". When I looked closer at the labels, I was fascinated at the fact that the first step to washing with this collection is to use the conditioner first as specified, followed by shampoo as the second step.

* Products are PR samples sent for consideration. Everything written is my own opinion.

Budget Beauty Natural Makeup Look

Wednesday, February 24, 2016

Everything used in this look can be found at the drugstore. It's a very natural look that could be worn everyday. Of course, you can create your own personal look with different coloured eyeshadow or lipstick, but the products used here are some of my budget favourites!

Photos are done by Clarence of @thebabylens! Much love to him for helping me take some great shots!

I start by applying my base using L'Oreal Infallible Pro-Matte Foundation (please excuse my ugly chipped nails!!).

I really really like this! The formula is great for a drugstore foundation that works very well with my skin. It's definitely going into my all-time drugstore favourites. I tend to get very oily and this demi-matte foundation is able to keep the greasy look at bay while still giving a natural, glowing look to the skin. The coverage can be built up, but it's generally a medium to full coverage.
