Eye Post #8: What are "Polarized" Sunglasses?

I have many people come into the optical and ask me "What's the difference between polarized sunglasses and non-polarized sunglasses?"

Well, let me tell you about it. :)

Regular sunglasses have their tint and coatings to protect your eyes from UV and help you with the brightness. Polarized sunglasses have an additional filter that is built into the lens itself that can eliminate horizontal glare (any glare reflecting off a horizontal surface).

Imagine that you're on a lake getting ready to go fishing and you're looking at the surface of the water on a nice sunny day. You notice that there are reflections off the surface that are super bright and uncomfortable to look at. You can't even see whether there are any fish swimming around. When you have polarized sunglasses on, not only does the tint help dim the surroundings so that the brightness of the sun is more comfortable, but the filter in the lens will completely cancel out the reflections! You would be able to clearly see right to the bottom of the lake and the fish swimming around.

That is the beauty of polarized sunglasses. It will eliminate the glare off water, snow, sand, the hood of your car, a wet road on a sunny day... any horizontal surface that reflects light. People who drive a lot or are outdoors often would prefer this type of sunglasses.

Some amazing brands that specialize in polarized sunglasses include Maui Jim (THE BEST polarized sunglasses out in the market), Oakley, Rayban, and Polaroid. Other designer brands don't specialize in these lenses but will have select models that come polarized.

My professional recommendation is to get polarized sunglasses, especially since they would be worn year round. They are slightly more costly than regular sunglasses but for the visual and health benefits you get from it, it's all worth it at the end.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask! :)

Until next time, Des

  1. This is good website. Thank you for publish my post. Best polarized sunglasses have a tendency to have lenses that are a few times bigger than your eye attachment and are intelligent. They have a tendency to have outlines that snare behind the ears. Most contemporary aviator sunglasses are captivated however pilots won't wear aviator sunglasses as they can make seeing other air ship difficult.
