Eye Post #6: Night-Time Contacts When I Sleep?!

Welcome back to another eye post!

A friend asked me about what he heard as "night-time contacts": what they are, what they do, etc. Well, let me give you a tidbit about them.

Current Favourite Scents (Approved by the BF)!

I'm very picky with scents, whether it's with body lotion, fragrance, soaps, or candles. I always want to make sure that it's not a scent that I will easily get sick of. I don't like those that are too floral or musky or artificial/fake (if that makes any sense). I have a handful here that I'm currently loving and the BF approves them as well (his opinion matters too because he'll be smelling whatever I may have on that day and I don't want him to back off haha).

Life in Pictures #2: NYC

I finally stepped into the real city-life of New York City for the very first time in October! I was a true tourist down there! I took a ton of pictures, went to all the typical attractions, but most importantly I spent my unforgettable weekend there with amazing people. Here is a recap of my trip in pictures... can you guess where I visited?

Firsts for Everything

I've had the privilege to try so many new things in these past few months. Some of them you'll probably think "Why on earth has she not done that or tried that before?! How?!"

Let's just say that I was a pretty sheltered child and wasn't exposed to new things as much as other kids then. :P

Here are some things that I have finally done, and can now cross off my lifelong bucket list!

1. Apple picking at an orchard and walking through a corn maze at the farm. The apples were so juicy, crisp, and RED DELICIOUS (ok sorry, that was a terrible pun).

Nail Colours for the Fall

Sorry for the delay in this post! I was in New York City this past weekend with my best friends and I had a blast (be on the lookout for a photo diary of my weekend)!

The crisp, cool weather calls for new shades of colour that are appropriate for the fall. Here are some of my favourites from my own junky collection of nail polish.

Eye Post #5: The Science Behind Dirty Contact Lenses & Amoebas

Some of you may remember the headline from months ago regarding a Taiwanese girl who supposedly had amoebas eat away at her eyeballs. Bleh.

I'm in my second month of school in the opticianry program, and I've finally learned the science behind what happened to this girl and her unfortunate eyeballs. So what exactly happened?

Long story short: A girl wore her disposable monthly contact lenses for six months straight without taking it out when sleeping or washing her face. Dirty water was used and her contact lenses became a host site for amoebas, which ate away at her corneas (you can read the full story here).

Current Lip Product Likes + Dislikes

I've only recently started to wear more of a variety of lip products (seriously, back then all I ever wore was no colour lip balm). I've found some that I love and wear constantly, and some that I tried and just don't like.

THE LIKES:

Fit Fed and Happy

Thank you Linda for inviting me to join this fun linkup! Check out her health & fitness blog at thefitty.com

"Life in Pictures" is a challenge in which I take pictures to recount what I've been doing this week while avoiding as much text as possible. Let's see if you can figure out what I've been doing. :)

What's On My iPhone?

I love Apple. I don't have a Macbook at the moment (can't afford it, still on a student budget wahhh) but I do own a third generation iPod Nano and am currently using my iPhone 4S.

I'm not one who hoards apps like no tomorrow. I don't like the cluttered look from having pages and pages of apps. I like to keep my phone as organized as I can, only keeping apps that I actually use and deleting those that I haven't touched in months or even in a year.

Autumn Haul

I've never felt this feeling before, but I'm actually sick of shopping. I did so much shopping over the summer that now I don't even have that temptation of wanting to go to mall and "walk around" (we all know that we don't really mean that haha).

Regardless, I was able to do some back-to-school/fall shopping around town and during my trip to Buffalo, NY with my family back in August. The sales were amazing! Here are some of the things that I got for this quickly approaching season.

Life Hacks

We live in such a busy society, and sometimes we just need some tips and tricks to get us through each day. When I learned of some of these, immediately I thought "MINDBLOWN. WHY DIDN'T I KNOW OF THIS BEFORE?!" Hopefully you get a similar reaction and find these useful! :)

Beauty Scenario Tag

Tags are always so fun to read, so I've got another one for you now! They call it the Beauty Scenario Tag. I'm given beauty-related situations and I have to share my response to each of them. Here we go!

1. You have to get rid of all your foundations and you can only keep one high end and one drugstore, which do you keep?

If I had to choose from my current collection of foundation:
High end- Make Up Forever Mat Velvet +
Drugstore- CoverGirl Outlast Stay Fabulous

2. You go for an interview and the lady interviewing you has lipstick on her teeth. Do you approach the subject or ignore it completely?

Realistically, I would pretend that everything is fine and dandy. I would never mention it to her.

3. You're not feeling yourself and need a pick me up. Which lipstick do you put on to make yourself feel beautiful?

I recently purchased the CoverGirl Outlast All-Day Lip Colour in 547 Rose Pearl and I like it (not a lipstick though, moreso a lip stain). It gives a rosy red colour that's not too bold but still gives some definition and colour to step up a simple make-up look. I would probably gravitate towards this product if I needed to make myself feel more classy, sophisticated, and all around pretty haha. Definitely my pick-me-up lip product at the moment.

4. You go back in time for a day to your teenage years, how would you do your hair and makeup differently?

Hair- I would stop thinning my hair out as much as I did back then at the hair salon because I always ended up looking like an alien with a big, thick head of hair at the top and much thinner, wispier layers at the bottom. I would also tell myself to grow my hair out longer because the long-hair look suits me the best.

Makeup- I would get myself to do my eyebrows, put on mascara, and under-eye concealer everyday instead of having absolutely nothing on the face.

5. You ask your hairdresser for a shoulder length Pixie Lott hair cut, but they hear you wrong and they give you a pixi cut. Do you
a) smile, say thank you, leave and call your mom hysterical
b) Cry in the chair and things get awkward
c) Complain to the manager and demand a refund

Knowing my personality, I would probably do the things mentioned in a). I always want to avoid conflict or tension. The other two options are definitely actions that are too agressive or unlike me.

6. Your friend surprises you with a 4 day city break and you have 1 hour to pack. Which 'do it all' palette do you pack in your makeup bag?

Lorac Pro To Go Palette (it's on my wishlist).

Taken from loraccosmetics.com

7. Your house has been robbed, don't worry everyone is safe, but your beauty stash has been raided. What's the product you really hope is safe?

Any of my skincare items! Especially my Clinique Moisture Surge Extended Thirst Relief Moisturizer because my skin loves it too much.

Taken from sephora.com

8. Your friend borrows your makeup and returns it in awful condition. Do you
a) just pretend you haven't noticed
b) Ask them to repurchase it
c) Secretly do the same thing to something of theirs

Never c), that's definitely too mean and it will have no benefit except of hurting the friend as well. I would probably ask them to repurchase it if it's in such bad conditions that even I couldn't continue using it.

If you have any other beauty scenarios for which you want me to share a response, let me know in the comments below! Other than that, hope it was a great read!

Until next time, Des

Review: China Glaze Peonies & Park Ave City Flourish Nail Lacquer Collection

Peonies & Park Ave
Lotus Down

Spring in My Step
At Vase Value

I have way too many nail polishes but when I saw this China Glaze collection being sold at Costco for only $20, I definitely had to get it. It was such a fantastic deal that was impossible to resist! I purchased this set of nail polishes around a month ago and I wanted to try them all before I gave my review. Above are swatches of some of the polish in the collection.

Who can use it?
All girls! And I guess boys who like having some colour on their nails?

What is it?
They're just typical nail polishes/lacquers. They do have hardeners in them as well.

When do I use it?
Anytime! Since the colours in this set are more bright and pastel-like, I like to use these particular ones moreso in the spring and summer (but that's my own preference).

How do I use it?
I get lazy and I just paint my nails without using a base coat or top coat. However, the best way to ensure that the polish is lasting and chip-resistant in addition to protecting your nails would be to use a base coat and top coat with the colour polish.

How much is it?
An individual China Glaze polish can retail approximately $5 (some places lower in price, some other places higher). I got this entire collection for only $20! Definitely try and purchase nail polishes from a beauty outlet or warehouse rather than at a regular drugstore because it costs a lot cheaper!

My thoughts?
I was bittersweet about these polishes. I really liked the colours of the polishes in this set, they're beautiful for the spring with the pastel colours and it looks great in the summer with the brighter colours as well. The polish dries quickly and the colour doesn't fade with wear. However, I found that these polishes (perhaps China Glaze as a brand) tend to chip very easily, even when I do have a base and top coat on. I would find little chips by the second or third day which is disappointing. Other nail polish brands that I've worn don't even chip as easily as these ones. If you're someone who doesn't mind touching up their nails whenever they chip then it's not too big of a problem (I, on the other hand, am one who doesn't usually retouch).

Maybe China Glaze and I just don't get along. China Glaze users, did you have the same experience as I did?

Until next time, Des

Life Moments: Tough Mudder

Tough Mudder. Hosted on 3 continents. Held in the same weekend. A 16 km obstacle course.

Never would I have thought that I would be able to complete it, but I did. You're running up and back down double black diamond hills (since the course was held at a ski resort), trekking through thick slippery mud, getting electric shocked, dunking yourself in ice water, jumping off a 12 feet high wall... it really is a test of your stamina, strength, and mental grit. However, it was so rewarding to see that my team started and finished together. Team camaderie definitely plays a big role in completing this crazy-ass event! Cramps and blisters held us back but we didn't let that stop us! I'm so proud to have been a part of this group (Mudkip and Friends!)

The obstacles on this year's Tough Mudder Toronto 2014 course were:

Glory Blades- Getting up and over 2.5m high walls slanted towards you.

Mud Mile- Running a mile over slippery, slimy mud hills and through waist-deep mud pits.

Just The Tip- Scaling sideways along a bare wall using only your grip and finger strength across multiple long hand-holds, if you can't make it you fall into mud water.

Devil's Beard- Crawl under a heavy rope net along the muddy ground.

Arctic Enema- Jump into a pit of freezing ice water and submerge yourself to swim under a plank to get to the other side.

Bale Bonds- Parkour over several big bales of hay.

Warrior Carry- Carry someone for 5 m and then switch for the next 5 m.

Berlin Walls- Climb up and over a set of 3m high walls.

Walk The Plank- Jump off a 12 feet high wall into a muddy water pit and swim 40 feet to get back on land.

Ladder To Hell- Climb up and back down an oversized, 5 m high ladder with widely separated rungs.

Everest- Sprint up a quarter-pipe coated with mud and grease and make it to the top.

Balls To The Walls- Scale up a wall 3.5 m high using only a muddy rope, doing the same going down the other side.

Funky Monkey- Monkey bars greased with mud that go up a steep incline for the first half and descend downwards for the second half, if you can't make it you fall into some muddy water.

Kiss of Mud- Crawl commando-style under barbed wire on your belly in thick, goopy mud.

Electroshock Therapy- Run through a field of live electric wires.

We were rewarded with some good tastin' beer, a (cold) shower to rinse off the grime and mud (that got to places you never thought mud could get to), the classic orange headband and an Under Armour shirt that tells the world you are a Tough Mudder finisher.

Worth it? Oh yea for sure, even with the muscle soreness and cramps that lasted several days after. This is now checked off on my bucket list.

Are you tough enough to be a Tough Mudder? (This picture doesn't properly represent how tough you should be haha)

Until next time, Des

OOTD- Some Coral To Brighten Your Day ( + Bonus OOTD!)

Life Moments: Balsam Lake Cottage Trip

I had an amazing weekend with my McMaster family at the cottage. It was my very first time staying at a cottage... it was basically a giant slumber party with my closest school friends. Balsam Lake was beautiful. I couldn't have asked for a better grad trip with these hooligans. :)

It's a unique getaway, definitely different from the usual backpacking trips or going to an exotic resort. I enjoyed being away from the hustle and bustle of the city and life back home. There were great times at the beach, on the dock, walking around the local town, attempting to fish, stargazing, sitting around a campfire and making s'mores, boardgames, cooking meals , sharing life... a whole bunch of stuff that you usually don't get to do with everyone together as a big group.

To The Famo, thank you for all the moments and memories created. Not just from this trip, but since first year when we all met one another. Here's to many more years of craziness to come!

What did you do and where did you go for your grad trip?

Until next time, Des

P.S. Photo creds to Tiffany T., Rosemary L., Lowell K., Wesley T., Derek T., and Christine W. for your beautiful contributions to this photo diary!
